Growth Form: Small trees or shrubs 1.5–3.5 m tall.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades oblanceolate,4–12.8 cm long, 2–5.1 cm wide. Apex acute. Base acuminate. Surfaces glabrous or glabrate. Margins usually toothed from apex to at least ½ their length. Petioles 1–1.5 cm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers (1–)3 in cymes 10–25 mm long, crowded near upper branchlets, peduncles 4–7 mm long, pedicels 2–7 mm long, subtended by paired bracteoles. Flowers bisexual (perfect), strongly irregular. Calyx 5–parted, minute. Corolla funnelform–unilabiate, 5–parted, the tube split adaxially, the lobes spreading, white with purple lines within, glabrous externally, pubescent within, the tube 12–17 mm long, the lobes 8–15 mm long, margins winged. Stamens 5, distinct, ± as long as corolla tube; anthers introrse, dithecal, opening by longitudinal slits, the pollen shed from the coherent anthers and collected by the indusium on the outgrowing style. Ovary inferior, ovoid, 2-celled; ovule placentation axile; style exserted and protruding through the adaxially split tube, curved abruptly downward near stigma,18–22 mm long; stigma 1–2-lobed.

Fruit: Fruit drupaceous; 2–celled; dark purplish black; ovoid; 5–7 mm long; 3–5 mm wide; glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Seeds 1 to numerous; with oily endosperm.

Ploidy: 2n = 16*

Habitat: Occurring in wet forest.

Elevation Range: (150–)700–1,400 m.
